MACKESY DOUBLES UP IN CWRA STARS TO LEGENDS TOUR OPENING RACE AT MARSHFIELD MOTOR SPEEDWAY
MARSHFIELD, WI - Mark Mackesy, Wausau, WI., and no stranger to victory lane, grabbed two Feature wins, Saturday afternoon, May 4th, in CWRA Stars to Legends
Tour season opening action at Marshfield Motor Speedway, Marshfield, WI. Under gorgeous sunny skies, the veteran driver showed why he is one of the top ranked drivers in the Midwest as he captured both 30 lap main events on the day over a great field of 25 Late Model racing machines.
The first 30 lap main event found pole position starter, Mike Reichenberger, Appleton, WI., jumping out to an early lead. Joey Pontbriand, Norway, MI., immediately began to challenge Reichenberger and the two battled side by side for a number of laps.
Pontbriand finally broke free extending his lead to several car lengths. Pontbriand appeared at that point to have the fastest car on the track, but a black flag was displayed, with Pontbriand mistakenly thinking it was for him. He pulled into the pits where his car stalled, all but ending his chances for the win. Reichenberger once again inherited the lead but soon had pressure from a number of drivers including Mackesy. Battles for the top 6 positions ensued but with the laps winding down, Mackesy took control of the race and took the checkered flag 1st by a couple car lengths. Chad Butz, of Green Bay, WI., started 14th on the grid and steadily moved through the field. His effort came up just a bit short however, and the young driver had to settle for 2nd at the finish. "Rookie of the Year" contender, and behind the wheel of a limited Late Model type race car, Jason Stark, Sparta, WI., moved from his 15th, as a result of setting 2nd fastest time, starting position, all the way up to 3rd spot at the Checkered flag. Reichenberger hung on for 4th position at the finish followed by Frank Nitzke, Berlin, WI., and fast qualifier, Harley Jankowski, of Sparta, WI. Jankowski's finish was notable in that he chose to take the RMS Contracting, "Race to the Front" bonus of $250, open to the program's fast qualifier on, by starting in last position, 24th in the field. Jankowski passed 18 cars in an impressive run finally winding up 6th. Dan Lindsley, Norway, MI., Darren Jackson, Wis. Rapids, WI., Rookie contender, Mitch Stankowski, Wausau, WI., and 2018 CWRA Tour champion, Jeff Weinfurter, Wis. Rapids, WI., rounding out the top 10.
The second 30 lap Feature found Derrick Van Dreel, Kellner, WI., starting from the pole and taking an early lead. Before long however it was Weinfurter moving up from his 5th spot grabbing the lead and appearing to have the car to beat. Weinfurter maintained the top position through numerous caution flag slowing incidents, but Mackesy was the man on the move taking the 2nd spot on lap 22. The two veteran drivers battled nose to tail and side by side like they have so many times before with Mackesy eking out a two car length win at the finish. Lindsley made a late rush to the front placing 2nd, with Harley Jankowski in another nice run placing 3rd. Weinfurter slipped to 4th at the stripe and was followed by Butz, Nitzke, Reichenberger, Stankowski, Van Dreel, and Rob Christen, Holmen, WI., rounding out the top 10 finishers.
An enthusiastic crowd was on hand for the event, and they are looking forward to the next Central Wisconsin Racing Association Stars to Legends Tour action, Friday night, May 17th, at Golden Sands Speedway, Plover, WI. That race will honor the legendary Central Wisconsin racing star, Marv Marzofka. Marzofka will be on hand for the race and fans can relive racing's exciting past with the popular driver. A completely restored, by Jay Capek, to original car that Marzofka raced to four track championships in one year, will be a part of the show as well.
